Hey I'm new to CastlevaniaDS modding and don't know how to add sprites in to Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. I'm using DSVania and am trying to replace Richter sprites. How do I do this?
Luckily I just got done explaining this in a pm message so it will save me some time lol.
I'll just paste it here, this is the method of importing sprites WITHOUT the use of Tile Molester (which is the method I use) so if this method does not work for you I'll explain the Tile Molester way I use.
Now on to adding new sprites into the games with DSvania, first thing is to get the palette of the new sprites you have, I normally use a program called Advanced Palette Editor and then use the color picker option to obtain the value for each part of the sprite (tutorial HERE), once you get those values then you go to the sprite editor option within Dsvania editor and navigate to the "other" tab and then choose the sprites you want to replace, you can make sure of the order of the sprites within the animation editor so you know which sprites to replace and in what order. Afterwards you choose the "Open in GFX Editor" option which will load the sprites and palettes, your next step is to now replace each of the 16 color values with the ones you got from your new sprites using Advanced Palette Editor which will change the palette of the sprites you intend to replace with the one of the ones you will be adding later. Now once your done with that then you choose the "export gfx" option to export the the group sprites as well as the palette which will be within your gfx folder located within the same folder as your DSvania tool. Now next is to open those sprites within that folder into a photo editing software, I use a program called Paint.NET and once you have that installed its best to go ahead and crop each of the individual sprites for your new sprites (the ones your adding to the game) so they are all separate so you can add them at your leasure to the old sprites (tutorial can be found here), once you have the right sprites cut out then you simply have to open the sprites you got from extracting the gfx within DSvania and open it with Paint.Net but be sure to open it within its own seperate tab within the program (you can open up a separate window), next its simply a matter of using Paint.NET to cut out the old sprites and replace them with the new ones and then save that image with the new sprite order as is. Last steps after that is to go back to DSvania and choose the "import gfx" option which will import your new and edited sprites into the game which you can check to see how they look within the animation tab, you may have to go back and rearrange some sprites to look better and more aligned within the game which is why its best to keep the image open within Paint.NET until you have checked it out within the editor to see if its to your liking, once that is done you go and choose to save the entire thing within DSvania tool and then choose "build rom" to get your new rom within your extracted rom folder and test it ingame and then your done, repeat each of these steps for all the sprites within the sprite editor and you should not have any issues.
Well thats it, that is how you add sprites to DSvania without using Tile Molester, I myself still use Tile Molester but if you don't use it then this is the best method in my opinion for bypassing using that program, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

alternativel: hey just thought I'd ask here, is there any way to replace sprites in Rondo of Blood (TurboGrafx version, more precisely a .Bin .Cue version)? I just thought it would be cool using the custom Ritcher sprite from Serio and his team

TheLV: Yes, it is possible, if you wanna deal with segmented 16x16/16x32 sprites then go on, but I don't know how or if it is possible change the colors of X sprite, anyways, here's the proof

TheLV: Welcome kanashimi ! Besides the ol'reliable hex editor, you can use some utilities from RHDN like Stake by Dan for the OG Castlevania 1 or reVamp by +daniel+ for Cv3/AD, for further assistance, create a thread in the NES section, characters limit reached.
