I posted this for XB at his personal request and thought it might help others as well so...
First, click on the bat Icon labeled DSvania. When the program opens, click extract rom. A window will pop up, find your AOS, HOD, POR, DOS, and Ecclesia roms. Pick one to extract. I suggest Aria of Sorrow. You will see the game come up in the program. To edit rooms, just click on any room on the map and the picture will change to that room. Right click on anything in the room to change it. However clicking on one of the pink 'door' tiles will go to the corresponding room. To edit doors go to top bar and click 'edit doors'. All item codes are listed in the Item editor option. If you want to change an Item in the room, find the item in the Item editor that you want to swap, remember the Item number or local ID of the item. Right click item in room you want to swap, window opens allowing you to change it.
At the top where it says tools, are all of the editors. For sprites, open sprite editor, and go to any tab you want, enemies, souls, weapons, special objects, etc. Soma and Julius are listed under Other tab. Example, click tools, sprite editor, other tab, Soma player. While Soma is on screen, click open in GFX Editor on the bottom right, window pops up, place mouse over palette numbers and scroll with mouse wheel to see different color palettes, place mouse over GFX pointer numbers and scroll to see different sprite frames. Click Export GFX. Minimize DSV program, open gfx folder within DSvania folder. Click on the exported sprite pics to view in photo viewer (they will all have a bunch of numbers), right arrow gives next set of frames, left gives previous one. While pic is open, click open in 'paint' or whatever paint program you like. I personally use paint.net as it supports transparent backgrounds and sprite rotation, and resizing. You can do this with more than one frame set at once. Which is how I just copy characters from sprite sheet, and paste over ones in paint.net, so long as there animation is similar enough.
To modify weapons or armor, click tools, Item editor, pick item and change numbers as you see fit. Note some Hex knowledge is handy, as 01 = 01 but FF = 255 in game. FF is max you can use and can be buggy at times. Hex scale is 01 - FF. Example: 0A = 10, so putting a 10 in the strength slot will actually raise strength by 16. If you want to add 10 strength, put 0A in the slot.
Text editor will show you all text in game that can be changed, all tabs are pretty much self explanatory. If you want to see what I mean about changing the dialogue, go to events tab and look at the layout of each event. This may help you outline how to write out your dialogue, and will show you why I worded it the way I did. That's a simple explanation of it for now. I don't now about adding rooms or map tiles yet, sorry. Hope this is helpful to some.
