It is no surprise to anyone that CV Portrait of Ruin is a direct sequel of CV Bloodlines of the mega-drive, but it fails to look like its predecessor, for me the last straw was the alternative mode to be richter and maria when it could be John Morris and Eric Lecarde, and I want to make it look more like a sequel of Bloodlines, I'm going to exchange the sprites of the candle hearts for the gems of Bloodlines, but ... there is nothing else I could do to make it look more like its predecessor , and I want suggestions.
What can I do to make CV PoR more like CV Bloodlines? (I'm just a spriter, I don't know programming lol, and where are the sprites of hearts located on DSVEdit?)

Tbh I don't have an idea on how to make PoR more like BL, also the hearts are within the Common sprites, where you can find the explosion, fire, etc. effects.

Perhaps i could exchange some sub-weapons of PoR to look like the ones from BL, like the Boomerang and Axe maybe?

You can fine how to mod Richter and Maria for John and Eric, and change Maria's voice clips and behaviours lol

You can fine how to mod Richter and Maria for John and Eric, and change Maria's voice clips and behaviours lol making john instead of richter wouldn't be a problem, but making maria like eric would be difficult due to the size of the sprite and her attacks would need a little programming, and I don't know anything about programming lol ( But Eric using pigeons and turtles as weapons would be funny XD)

Eric should be Jonathan, and John should be Richter. Jonathan already has the use of spears, and relative size would be easy enough to create. Although, smoothing John's run animation may be a bit tricky.

You can fine how to mod Richter and Maria for John and Eric, and change Maria's voice clips and behaviours lol making john instead of richter wouldn't be a problem, but making maria like eric would be difficult due to the size of the sprite and her attacks would need a little programming, and I don't know anything about programming lol ( But Eric using pigeons and turtles as weapons would be funny XD) You can use DS vania & Dark Function to turn Richter & Maria into John & Eric respectively. They have not that big amount of sprites & animations. Delete OG chars fully, make new from scratch, animate. I not sure about what will do better - move a whip to correct it with John or delete it & make full animation with a whip in hand though. You can even add them some special skills. As for Maria, you can transform her birds into another weapon, it is a weapon to begin with. Or delete it & make full spear attack animation with Dark Function. You can also give Belmont sub weps to Eric or try to make new ones. No reprogramming is needed.

I'm using DSVania and this idea is very good, but I'm just a spriter this is very complicated for me, but I pass the torch on! who is interested in the idea from I am Me be my guest to do it, I think I will edit some sub-weapons to look like those of BL and the gems as i talked earlier, i will try to post an update soon i manage to do it.

Adding free space can help when you want to add more content to the game, instead of replacing existing. Check DS vania version. Portraits edition is one of the recently added options. As for overlay, you not have to use it. If you making character, export sprites into Dark Function & edit from there, delete OG sprites & use it's space.

I could try to swap in the gems but I don't know if DSVedit will let me import them without the free space. All I would have to do is export the common frames, and paste geams over hearts in paint.net. I just don't know if it will import them afterwards. Give me some time. We are all busy IRL.
