Best MetroidVania: Most of them have things they do better\worse then then each other so I don't think there is a best one. Best 3DVania: Worst ClassicVania: CV2. Worst MetroidVania: Portrait of Ruin (I really like the game but it's to stage based to be a MetroidVania imo). Worst 3DVania: I left best\worst 3Dvania blank because I haven't played the N64 ones and the ones I have played are quite different to each other so I would struggle to give an objective answer as to why I think it's the best\worse.

Master of Darkness, Silver Valley. you've never played vampire killer for the MSX that's interesting yeah it's kind of different from the NES Castlevania because instead of having individual life bars you just have this one long life bar so instead of being hit and you losing a few of those life bars you're getting hit and losing some of your life bar they changed a life bar system on that game when they created it it's got some other changes to it too but that was a major one that I noticed while playing it it's a really good game though you ever get time to sit down and play it you should I ended up getting a MSX emulator on my phone and then I played it off my phone and so I just sat down and decided to continuously play it one of the days I played it I ended up playing it for 6 hours yes 6 hours I like Castlevania one a lot it's my favorite 2D I did read a Castlevania wiki that declared that Castlevania series and vampire killer were unrelated because they were created two years apart one of the problems with this is is that Castlevania one was released on September 26th 1986 and vampire killer was released on October 30th 1986 when they said that they were totally unrelated they might have been talking about haunted castle which was released in December 26th 1987 and so that's only 456 days so either way neither vampire killer nor haunted Castle are 2 years apart from Castlevania one also I have played haunted castle as well and have researched about it and it was supposed to be just another version of Castlevania one just with a different look to the character as well as the castle and the layout of the castle is different after that it's got the same story but for vampire killer it would indeed be part of the Castlevania series because all it pretty much is is just a different name instead of it being called Castlevania one it was called vampire killer because of the whip that our hero used against Dracula and the layout for vampire killer really doesn't change much from what I see when I played it from Castlevania 1 the layout's pretty much the same and I like to both haunted castle and vampire killer especially since I got to see how to Castlevania one for the MSX played and I also got to experience haunted castle for the famicom as well but with the same story line the only thing really different like I said before was the way the castle looked the way our hero looked as well as the layout of the castle also I forgot to add in that the enemies and bosses also looked kind of different too but to be honest it really was great too be able to experience those versions of Castlevania one I got to say if you haven't played haunted castle as well that would be a good Castlevania for you to sit down and play too I love to that one as well that was amazing being able to sit there hours and hours and fight zombies and bats that came flying at you as well as mummies and the bosses you had to fight were just great to be able to fight and defeat them and say you beaten the game I kind of feel that haunted castle had a higher difficulty than the original Castlevania for the NES but of course you're also playing on a computer console so of course it's going to be a bit more difficult especially with the controls they had back then but at least I was able to play it on my phone as well and beat it I ended up finding haunted castle on my phone and it was the famicom version although I ended up researching it and it was also on arcade as well in Japan which anybody who played it in Japan during that time is pretty cool because that would be something I'd love to do. But yeah vampire killer and haunted castle are definitely two fun versions of Castlevania 1 and they are definitely worth playing.

LoS2 is probably my fav 3d Castlevania, not because of the completely backasswards story, lol, but for the simply huge size of exploratory 3d gaming you get in it.

LoS2 gets really ragged on but I love it. As you said there is a great world to explore and I actually like the story line. The stealth is a bit crap but once you have done it a couple of times and think of it as a puzzle rather then stealth it's fine. The thing that keeps bring me back to it though is Dracula\Dracul\Gabriel's gameplay. He's just fun to play, super powerful and I think they really nailed a playable Dracula.

For me, the Lords of Shadow franchise have the best storyline of the entire series, the fact that a Belmont becomes Dracula after losing all his faith and happiness is an incredible thing, I get goose bumps whenever I see the opening of LoS2 Dracula reciting the prayer with that guard, showing that one day he also had faith, but now he is the dark lord, I still think it’s weird that Trevor’s being Alucard, but it makes perfect sense! When Dracula killed Trevor Trevor said he was his son, and in hopes of reviving him, he turned Trevor into a vampire, but at no time did Trevor say his name to Dracula so he decided to give his son a name: Alucard. The franchise may not have had the best gameplay, but for me it had the best story, And on top of that there is SIMON, and if there is Simon, it is infinitely better.

The reason Order of Ecclesia is the best metroidvania for me, is because it is the perfect mix of ClassicVania and Metroidvania, I love SOTN, PoR and AoS but they all take place inside Castleo do Dracula, I don't see any problem but it starts to get a little sick, where was that game that you had to hang around all of Wallachia to get to the Castle, where was that game that you had to cross all over Europe with your friend to get to the castle? even the Lament of Innocence entered this vibe and takes place inside a Castle, Order of Ecclesia changed that and also brought a female protagonist to MetroidVanias and with it came SUPER DIFFICULTY, OoE for me it's almost a 2D Dark-Souls!

Dark Souls is in gameplay at least a Castlevania game imo. Both ClassicVania and Dark Souls are hard games. They are set in a gothic setting with strategically placed monsters that can kill you or be killed in just a few hits, you have to transvers narrow paths where one wrong step is insterdeath. This leads to a boss encounter where learning the bosses attacks is just as important as attacking said boss. On defeat of the boss you get a small reprieve, restored to full health before continuing. Add in MetroidVanias leveling, save rooms, gear, world unlocking\exploration, etc and you have 2d Dark souls.

I played the M version of Haunted Castle which is the hardest, not the best start to be honest xD, I had to use save states by stage 3. The music was on point, I'm a sucker for FM synthesis. For the VK MSX, I watched a long play, I seems that Holy Relics hack got the keys/doors idea from there. I should give it a try.
